Run It Local: The LLM Download Directory
Where to download open-weight LLMs to run on your own hardware: torrent and magnet indexes, official hubs, mirrors, one-command runtimes, trusted GGUF quantizers, and the opsec to do it safely.
Every prompt you send to a cloud AI is a log entry on somebody else's server. Run the model on your own hardware and that log never exists. Here's every place we trust to get the weights, from torrent swarms that can't be taken down to the official hubs, plus the opsec to do it right.
The Swarm: Torrents & P2P
No single host, no single kill switch. When a repo gets nuked, a swarm keeps seeding. A magnet's infohash locks the exact bytes you get, but it can't tell you the bytes match the label. Check the SHA-256 against the publisher's model card, and read Field Notes before you join a swarm.
pip install pirateface slots it into existing transformers code.

// Torrent index · curateddrforbin.ai
A small, hand-checked index of open-weight model torrents. Every listing is checked against its official model card and shows license, parameter count and context length. It's an index only and hosts nothing. It also has an RSS feed and an API.
drforbin.ai→
// Torrent registryModel Registry
Open-source models published as plain .torrent files, each with its license tag and live seed and peer counts. The code is MIT-licensed and open on GitHub.
modelregistry.io→
// DIY torrentsLlamaTor
GPL-3 scripts that pull models from Hugging Face and turn them into torrents. Pre-built torrents sit in the repo's torrents branch. It's a community project, so check the commit history before you depend on it.

// Official magnetGrok-1 (xAI)
xAI released the Grok-1 weights under Apache 2.0 and put the magnet link in the README. It's a rare case of a lab seeding its own model.

// Official magnet dropsMistral AI
Mistral made the bare magnet link its launch signature. Mixtral 8x22B dropped as a tweeted torrent before any blog post. Watch the feed, then grab the official checksums.

// Research swarmAcademic Torrents
A community BitTorrent repository holding 400+ TB of research datasets and papers. Come here for training and fine-tuning data rather than finished models.

// Distributed inferencePetals
This one isn't a download. It's BitTorrent-style inference: a big model is split across volunteer GPUs so you can run it from home. It came out of the BigScience project.

The Hubs: Primary Sources
This is where the weights land first. Prefer .safetensors and .gguf files over pickled .bin/.pt files, which can execute code when they load.

// Alibaba hubModelScope
Alibaba's model hub, often the first stop for Qwen and other Chinese lab releases. The international site is modelscope.ai and the domestic one is modelscope.cn.

// Google hubKaggle Models
Google's model hub, where you can download Gemma and others after accepting the license. You'll need an account, so plan on handing over an identity.

// NVIDIA hubNVIDIA NGC
NVIDIA's catalog of models and checkpoints, including Nemotron, packaged for its own inference stack.

Mirrors & Regional Hubs
These are useful when the main hub is slow, blocked or rate-limiting you. A mirror is still a third party, so verify hashes against the original repo.
HF_ENDPOINT=https://hf-mirror.com and your existing HF tooling downloads through it. It also ships hfd, a downloader built on aria2.

// Regional hubOpenCSG
A Chinese open model hub built on CSGHub, with its own SDK for pulling weights.

// Regional hubWiseModel
A Chinese open-source model community that mirrors many domestic lab releases.

One-Command Pulls
These are runtimes with their own model libraries. Pick a model, it downloads and runs, and your prompts never leave the box.
ollama pull it, then ollama run it. It's the easiest on-ramp there is.

// Desktop appLM Studio
A desktop app with built-in model search. It pulls GGUF and MLX builds straight from Hugging Face.

// OCI artifactsDocker Hub ai/
Models packaged as OCI artifacts for Docker Model Runner, so docker model pull ai/<model> works like pulling any image.
hub.docker.com/u/ai→
// ContainerizedRamaLama
Runs models inside containers, which isolates them from the host. It pulls from Ollama, Hugging Face and OCI registries.

// Desktop appJan
An open-source, offline-first ChatGPT alternative that downloads models from its hub or Hugging Face.

// Single filellamafile
From Mozilla.ai: the model and runtime in one executable. Download it, mark it executable, run it, with no install needed. Pre-built files are on Hugging Face under mozilla-ai.

Trusted Quantizers
Most people run quantized GGUF builds, not raw weights. Anyone can upload a GGUF, so stick to uploaders with a track record.
Field Notes: Download OpSec
- Your IP is public in a swarm. Every peer can see it. Torrent through a VPN you actually trust, or seed from a VPS rather than your home connection.
- Verify, don't trust. Match each file's SHA-256 against the original publisher's repo. A magnet guarantees the bytes are consistent, not that they're authentic.
- Pickles bite.
.bin/.ptcheckpoints can run arbitrary code when loaded. Prefer.safetensorsor.gguf. - Read the license. "Open weights" isn't always open source. Gemma, Llama and some others ship custom terms with use restrictions.
- Know the uploader. Look for the original lab or a quantizer from section 05. A brand-new account with a hot model and no history is a red flag.
- Then cut the cord. Once the weights are on disk, the runtime doesn't need the internet. Firewall it and prove it to yourself. Start with llama.cpp.
